The Dog Act 1976 and the Shire of Jerramungup Dogs Local Law addresses the control and registration of dogs, the ownership and keeping of dogs, and the obligations and rights of people, both as dog owners and non-dog owners.
Shire of Jerramungup Dogs Local Law
Under the Shire of Jerramungup Dogs Local Law you can keep the following number of dogs (for purpose 24(4) of the Act)
- Premises outside a townsite, 6 dogs over the age of 3 months and the young of those dogs under that age
- Premises located within a townsite, 2 dogs over the age of 3 months and the young of those dogs under that age.
Ratepayers and residents should be aware that Council is approaching dog control in a manner that is required by legislation and community needs. The Dog Act provides severe penalties for ongoing offences and offenders can face Court proceedings.
Microchipping
Is your dog microchipped? From 1 November 2015 it is compulsory by law to have your pet microchipped.
For puppies in Western Australia, the law requires them to be microchipped at three months old.
If you already own an older dog, you must have your pet microchipped as soon as possible. Although microchips might not have been compulsory when the dog came into your ownership changes to the Dog Act require microchipping for all dogs in Western Australia.
Registrations
All dogs over three (3) months old are required by State legislation to be micro chipped and registered; including all farm dogs. To register your dog please complete a Dog Registration Form and return it to the Shire Office along with the dogs microchip number and proof of sterilisation if applicable.
