Anzac Day Service

26 April 2011

A larger than expected crowd of 85 people assembled at the Jerramungup War Memorial to pay their respect to “Our Fallen Soldiers” from wars gone by. 2011 marks the anniversary of Tobruk (1941) and also  Greece/Crete (1941) where many lives were lost.

Ian Mangan, a Korean veteran, was once again responsible for the organization of the day and service. He led past veterans and representatives in a march to the memorial where Sam Winters had the official duty of lowering and raising the Australian flag. After the Last Post and Reveille, 11 wreaths were laid as tributes to the men and women who fell in the past wars.

It was very pleasing to see the involvement of some school children in uniform who laid wreaths. Their input into this day becomes more important as time goes by.

Inside the hall, Rev Byseveld conducted a short service and Shire President, Bruce Trevaskis spoke on the Greece/Crete war period. Ian thanked all involved with the running of the day and was overwhelmed with the large attendance, bearing in mind the Easter holiday.

Thanks must go to Ian Mangan (who travels out from Narrogin) for his commitment and dedication to make this day possible at Jerramungup. Thank you to everyone for your attendance and also to people who donated flowers for the wreaths made by Rose Ganzer and Janine Barrett. Thanks also to Christine Petersen for providing everyone with a delicious morning tea.
