Bremer Bay Civic Square and Skatepark

The Civic Square area was identified during planning for the Bremer Bay Town Centre. The landscape master plan describes the area as “a shaded forecourt that has the potential for large community gatherings and accommodates a play/sculptural space”. Funding was received through Royalties for Regions, Growing our South, to develop a town centre which included the development of a civic square.

Planning for the project started in 2013 with the Shire engaging landscape architects to develop concept designs for the proposed Civic Square.  The Shire formed a Community Reference Group (CRG) to participate in the design process. The CRG provided feedback for the initial concept designs; their involvement was instrumental in sourcing donations and making the project a reality.

The community approached the Shire in 2015 asking to add a skatepark element to the design of the civic square. A concerted fundraising effort raised approximately $22, 000 which contributed to a successful Lottery West grant application. Lotterywest announced funding towards a Skate Park & Youth Space in December 2016. The local community generously donated materials such as wood and granite rocks which will be used throughout the civic space.

The civic space incorporates a skatepark, nature based playground, grassed area, BBQ shelter and public toilets. The project is due for completion in September 2018.
