Applying for a (residential) Building Permit

So what is your first step?

In general, the development process can be separated into three major Steps:

  1. Planning Approval
  2. Building Approval
  3. Notice of Completion

To guide you through the development application process, the Shire of Jerramungup has created a Development Approval Process Info Sheet and various Checklists.

The use of these assisting documents promotes a smooth approval process.

If your development has been issued planning approval or is exempt from planning approval, you can now proceed to step two and start your application for a Building Permit. (If you require further information on planning approval, please refer to the planning section on this website)

Generally, you have two options to go about your building permit application, you can either;

a) engage a private building surveyor, or
b) utilise the Shire’s building surveyor for parts of your application.
(For more detailed information about these two options, please refer to the Development Approval Process Info Sheet)

Once you have compiled all information as indicated on the Building Checklist, you are now ready to submit your application package. You can either email all documents to development@jerramungup.wa.gov.au or hand in the documents in person to the Jerramungup Shire Office on Vasey Street or the Bremer Bay Shire Office on Mary Street (located within the Community Resource Centre).

After your project has been completed, please make sure to submit form BA7 “Notice of Completion”. This will activate stage three of the development process and ensures your (your builders’) compliance with the current Building Act 2011.

If you have any more questions or feel as if any critical information is missing, please do not hesitate to contact the Shire’s Development Team. We are looking forward to your feedback.
